Hot Spots, like at the top of the stairs, need to be safe, but also should be sharp-looking. People's eyes--not to mention their hands--will go right there to this spot to discern the quality like at no other.

All toprail is routed (a rounded, soft edge) and sanded smooth. All endgrain is routed as well, such cut-off deckboard ends, post sides, and stair treads. Cedar sands and stays smoother than green treated lumber.
